It doesn’t take an architect to recognize the complex design work and talent that went into designing the building we now know as the Tonawanda Castle. In fact, the Tonawanda Armory is considered to be the most stately of New York’s National Guard Armories. It was designed by Isaac Perry in the late 1800’s and finished in 1897. So who was Isaac Perry?
After working as an apprentice for several other noted architects, Perry was commissioned by Grover Cleveland in 1883 to oversee all construction projects at the capitol. In 1899, he was named the first State Architect. As State Architect, Perry designed and oversaw the construction of many government structures. This included the Olean, Niagara Falls, and Geneva Armories, among others. He is known for his use of the Romanesque style, of which the Tonawanda Armory is a prime example.
